MID-URETHRAL SLING
The most common cause of urinary incontinence among women is a condition called Stress Urinary Incontinence or SUI. SUI is the involuntary loss of urine during physical activity such as coughing, laughing, or lifting. In this case, the muscles that support the urethra (the small tube that carries urine out of the body) and bladder neck (the opening that connects the urethra to the bladder) have weakened, causing the urethra to drop during physical activity, which results in leakage.
Although behavioral treatment (e.g. Kegel exercises, bladder training, etc.) and prescription medications may help treat urinary incontinence caused by other conditions, for women who have SUI, Kraemer Women’s Care offers a minimally invasive surgical procedure during which a mid-urethral sling system is implanted. The sling system mimics normal anatomy by providing a ribbon of support under the urethra which prevents it from dropping during physical activity.
Benefits Associated with the Mid-Urethral Sling Procedure
- It’s quick: A simple, 30- to 45-minute procedure.
- It’s easy: Can be performed under either a general or spinal anesthetic.
- It’s minimally invasive: A small incision is made in the vaginal area and two small incisions are made through the skin in the groin area.
- It’s life-changing: Prevention of urinary leakage will allow you to remain as active as you want to be.
